They dazzle the crowd with their high-risk moves. They impress us with their aerial talent. But they are the most underrated wrestlers in the sport. They are the cruiserweights.
Mike Hardy, Chameleon, and Chris Jordan have lead the way in this division for GCW. The division came to a head when Chameleon defeated Hardy at Warpath to win the first GCW Cruiserweight championship. They fought in a hellacious ladder match, and it was a match to be remembered.
Then Chris Jordan arrived on the scene. In a three way bout at Shockwave, Jordan won the title from Chameleon, when Hardy’s fragile back gave out on him following a swanton bomb.
“The second I hit, I knew something was wrong,” says the currently shelved and injured Hardy. “I hurt my back when I was employed by the CWU in a match with Chameleon. Ever since then, after my surgery, my second vertebrae in my lower back has been a problem.”
Hardy’s doctor informed us that every time Mike steps into the ring, he risks a career ending injury. “Mr. Hardy’s vertebrae was cracked in two a few months ago in a match. We managed to repair it in surgery, and he healed quite well. But the vertebrae is still quite fragile, and we’ve told him he needs at least six months off for it to heal completely. He never seems to listen, and he keeps doing what he loves. Now he’s been hurt again as a result,” says Doctor Lynn Johnson, Hardy’s surgeon.
Hardy’s back was hurt once again, and will be out for about a month. This leaves the ever exciting Chameleon and the ever annoying Chris Jordan to carry the division. Jordan, the current champ, had some rather kind words about Hardy backstage.
“This guy’s the toughest in the GCW. Tougher than the Hard*core wrestlers. This guy is Hard*core. He wrestles every week, knowing he’s risking it all. He just loves the sport, and loves the fans.”
President Caldera even had a few things to say about Hardy. “I’ve tried asking him to take time off to heal up, but he hates missing time. This guy lives wrestling, and his dedication to this company is incredible.”
Chameleon has undergone several changes in his career, and now with his Demented character, Chameleon is beginning to be recognized. “I’ve heard that the best characters are usually just extensions of one’s real personality. I guess that’s what I’m going for. Tomato?”
Chameleon and Hardy have a great respect for each other. “The night I hurt Hardy and won the CWU Cruiserweight belt from him, I went to see him in the hospital. There was never any problem because of it,” Chameleon said. Chameleon first entered the CWU as an independent prospect picked up by President Caldera. But Chameleon initially failed to make an impact. However, through strict training and determination, Chameleon has become one of the top cruiserweights in the world.
Chris Jordan was a name first mentioned to the company by Toxic. Toxic managed to earn Jordan a tryout, and he instantly impressed the GCW staff with his talents. He signed a contract, and soon was a member of the Establishment. After establishing his character, Jordan broke out on his own, and won the cruiserweight title from Chameleon.
“I was set to win the match that night, but when Hardy went down on Chameleon with the swanton, I heard him groan in pain. I looked over, and he mouthed to me ‘I’m hurt!’ So I reached over and pinned him there. It just goes to show you, accidents happen in the ring, especially with Hardy’s wreckless style. But we put on a show that night, and I think we entertained the people. A little improv, maybe. But we’re good at what we do.”
Jordan recently has gone on to big fame as being undefeated, and now holding the Hard*core title as well. Jordan’s singles career is blossoming, but surely those of Hardy and Chameleon will follow.
“The fans respect what they do out there,” says President Caldera. “And I respect it to. That’s what it all boils down to. These guys put their lives on the line for my company. And for that, I am humbled.”
